You may have heard of the January Blues, but have you ever experienced them?
Just a few days into the new year, despite our resolutions, and the celebration of a new start, the darkest days of the year can hit very hard and make us feel like we’re prisoners of our own lives.
Hitting the anti-climax after the Holiday Season, in terms of the weather, money depleted in our pockets, business being quiet because many people aren’t spending, and being assaulted by the various germs and viruses making the rounds, just add insult to injury. Where did all the lights, colour, and the jollity go?
I drew a tarot card, this morning and turned up The Hermit.

Just look at this picture. It sort of expresses what we are facing. Darkness, cold, and not being able to have something we want. Having to wrap up warm. Having to find light whenever, and however, we can. Loneliness. Feeling lost. In the dark.
The Hermit’s cave is bleak, it lacks comforts, warmth, and all the things often taken for granted.
The Hermit has some sage advice for us though: This is a good time to go into ourselves, take the time we have been given, to reconsider our goals and work out what amendments we need to make. To seek our inner light, and to tend it so it can shine all the brighter, and be a beacon for those around us who are also struggling.
To find a different perspective, perhaps.
The decorations have come down, but the fairy lights are replaced with sparkling frost and snow.
We may feel bereft of the excitement of the Holiday Season, but we are beginning to see Mother Earth magickly growing buds on trees, and pushing crocus leaves through the frozen earth – we are seeing real miracles at work.
And if it is quiet, we should remember to make the most of this time for ourselves. Long hot baths, or showers; sitting comfortably with a roof over our head and a hot drink in our hand (thankfully). That long dark hour or two, morning or night, that gives us a little bit of extra time to meditate, to just ‘be’, and to determine that nothing has really changed……..it’s just colder and darker in this January cave.

So, like The Hermit, let’s light a candle and rejoice in its dancing flame, light and warmth, and keep it burning for others to see. We have just awoken, that’s all. This is just the beginning, and we are getting ready to start moving.

I have a diploma in reading tarot. I do unpaid readings and paid readings, and I still get nervous about reading tarot cards for someone else.
Reading the tarot for someone who has asked a straightforward question is always easier, because there is a base to work on. Tarot cards often have many layered meanings, which means an interpretation might actually not be correct in some cases and that is scary enough.
However, many many people really don’t seem to want to frame a specific question. I think it’s because they don’t want to give away their secrets/secret fears. Or they think that in doing so they are somehow giving the Reader clues.
Most of the people I read for do not offer a question and that is when my nerves really kick in.
I recently did a three card paid reading without a specific question. In some respects it’s really like them asking you to read their mind, and expecting you to be exactly right first bash. How could I possibly get it right in three cards? One for Past, one for Present and one for Future. What are the probabilities of them hitting the nail on the head? Plus an additional aspect of a blind reading is that the tarot cards could pick up any energy – even subconscious feelings that the Sitter is not even thinking about – in which case the Sitter might not resonate with the cards at all! No pressure then!
The cards in fact, hit the spot exactly, I found out later. The first card that came out was The Devil. I could have gone down several different roads with this card and I knew it, so, I clarified it by drawing another card. The King of Swords came out. This indicated that the issue was somehow linked to another person, probably a male who had had some kind of influence over my Sitter.
Reading the cards is always a leap of faith, but trusting the Universal energy and Consciousness – to connect to them properly – is the only way to go.

Naturally, the more readings you do and the more positive feedback you get, you are going to engender an innate trust that the cards will speak to you truthfully. And we all have to do it………put ourselves out there, every time (though the first few times are particularly scary) . But if you are worried about being nervous, let me assure you, it is something we all feel, and we all have to overcome. And if, at times, the Sitter does not resonate with the cards, there is little we can do other than offer, perhaps, to refund their fee……………. all the time knowing that the cards have, more than likely, picked up an underlying issue.
For me, just like many people, the nerves will come and go, but if you don’t take the plunge and do some readings, you will never feel the delight of hearing that you’ve hit the nail on the head. And it is so worth it.
