Coming up with Christmas gift ideas is difficult, and when I am Christmas shopping I want to find something a bit out of the ordinary for each person. I don’t really mind if they don’t use it afterwards, providing it has sparked an ‘Oooh what’s this?’ kind of response, or if it gets them to sit and look at it, or read it or play with it for a short time.
It isn’t a whole lot of fun watching someone opening your gift and then saying ‘Oh thanks!’ before swiftly moving on to the next parcel without even a backward glance. There is only so much that a person can say about the inevitable chocolates, socks or bubble baths that get unwrapped on practically every Christmas day.
So what is going to grab their attention?
In my experience, it doesn’t always need to be something that they have expressed an interest in, or necessarily cost the earth.
One year we bought my Dad a book on bread making, and to our surprise he really took to it…..he subsequently made all the bread in the household each week, and it became his speciality for him and my Mum. He loved doing it and we all enjoyed having some when we visited. If you were in favour, he would give you one of his little loaves of bread to show how special you were!
Another year we bought one of our daughters a set of fortune telling cards, which we bought her for fun and she then got interested in tarot from that little deck, and that is how I ended up writing this blog today! If you know someone has an interest in a particular thing, buying a deck of tarot cards is a great way to grab their interest. So if you know they like faeries or cats, for instance, there will be tarot decks that will have pictures they will adore – they don’t have to use them for tarot….. and don’t forget, collectors will love anything to add to their collection whether they use it in a practical way or not.
Or you could take a look at mine – it comes wrapped in gold tissue paper and in a gorgeous brocade bag. It is quite a lovely experience opening it, we are told!
Of course tarot is not to everyone’s taste but angel oracle cards might be, they are SO popular now and they are beautiful to look at, they are so gentle and uplifting and each card comes with wise words and sensible advice.
The latest craze are relaxation colouring books for grown ups! I received one of these for my birthday this year and I think they are great! Add to it some sparkly pens or watercolour paints and your loved one could get into art and create a masterpiece!
So , here you go……a couple of suggestions for you to look at…I bet you can think of at least one person whose eyes will light up with such a gift.
Good luck and happy shopping!
