Which is a good deck to start learning Tarot with? It is a good question and this is a great place to start.
Many tarot decks are ‘themed’ from Mythic, Witches, Victorian, Cats, Vampyres and Steampunk to name a few, so for these decks you really need to have a knowledge, or a particular fondness, for the subject in hand.
The Tarot House Deck, however, is a very pretty, and non-themed, deck designed to help make tarot reading easier. I will show you how.
Assuming you have no knowledge of tarot, or what to do, you sit with The Tarot House Deck which has arrived in the post, you unwrap the gold tissue paper which it comes in and take the cellophane off the deck, have a look through all the cards if you want. Then, shuffle the deck well, really well, because they are printed in order and whilst shuffling ask it to show you a card. Spread the cards across the table in front of you face down ~ or just cut the cards and take the top card off the pile left on the table ~ and look at that one card.
With the deck you will receive a leaflet of short meanings. The leaflet has all the Major Arcana meanings on one side and the meanings of the suits, in order, on the other. It is easy to find the relevant meaning for the card. So, if you pull out, for instance, the Nine of Cups, the short meaning will say this “You are enjoying the benefits of a close relationship, and feel as if all your wishes are coming true. You’ve worked hard and endured a lot to get here. These good times are a validation of your commitment, enjoy!”. There! You’ve had your first reading.
Let’s take this a step further. You can then do a three card reading. Shuffle the cards and, in your head, ask a question about your life such as ‘How can I feel better about myself?’; when you are ready, spread them face down and across the table in a line, then randomly pick three cards.
Here we have the Past (Knight of Swords), the Present (Queen of Wands) and the Future (The Star).
The leaflet will give you this information:
The Knight of Swords ~A young and impetuous male that you find rather charming bears an influence on you now (this is the Past, remember, though). Be wary as he will act with only superficial knowledge of a situation. He is quick to change opinion and therefore direction, meaning he could leave your life as quickly as he entered it. So, it could be that you have been left high and dry by someone in your life who you thought you could trust (it doesn’t always have to be a man – it is likely to represent a young adult or an immature person).
The Queen of Wands in the Present position will say this: A confident and capable woman who can turn her hand to anything and excel. She commits herself entirely, offering unrivalled loyalty, warmth and support but only to those things or people that matter most. You have the same qualities and attributes but should learn something about focussing them where they are truly needed or have maximum impact. (So this is the case right now – how you are or how you should be) This card is saying you have the ability to protect yourself in the future by learning who you can trust and who you can’t – ‘the Queen of Wands can turn her hand to anything and excel’.
The Future: The Star ~ This is a Major Arcana card so has a fair amount of significance ~ No matter how dark things seem to be, hope will help you through this pain, sorrow or loss. It may not be clear where you are going, when or how, but you aren’t supposed to know the outcome as yet. Instead, have faith and wait to see how things develop. This is an important card so it is suggesting that sometimes things happen to us and we don’t understand, but there is always a reason, and that is how we grow. Be patient, and have faith that soon you will understand how this hurt has made you stronger.
This little example of a reading is saying, you have been hurt in the past and right now you need to learn to read the signs of who you can trust and who you can’t (but you can do it), then shortly you will understand how this sad event has made you stronger in yourself, so have patience and hope in the meantime.
So when I say, when you get this deck you can start reading with it immediately, you can see how. You can read for yourself, or your family, simply by reading out the short meanings and see how they apply to the current situation. You will be amazed at the accuracy of tarot readings. Oh! and by the way ~ the Death card does not mean you, or someone else is going to die, this card merely indicates the ending of something which will make way for another opportunity.
Now, The Tarot House Deck comes with the leaflet of short meanings, which after a while will not be enough, so at this stage you are wanting the meanings to be a bit meatier! That’s when you head over to the Simply Tarot website for the in-depth meanings ~ if you hover over the card you get a quick prompt, if you click on it you get the short meaning and the in-depth meanings, which are mostly geared to how it can be applied to a particular person in a given situation. You will rapidly find that you are growing in confidence and knowledge of the cards without really realising it.
With your deck and leaflet you also get two extra cards with layouts for tarot spreads and what the positions are, and on the website you will find information on how you can pull the cards together in a spread, and how they relate to each other, and again, you will quickly find a spread that you enjoy using the most.
Add to this the most gorgeous brocade tarot bag that comes included in the price and you’ll see you are onto a winner! There are six bag colours to choose from – black, blue, green, pink, gold and red (at the moment – the blues and greens are selling fast!).
The Tarot House Deck is beautiful and beautifully presented – it costs £14.99 plus p&p which is really excellent value for money especially as it includes a bag to keep it in (that’s $21.77 US for the deck, as at the date of this post – we ship worldwide too!)
