Eight of Cups tarot card from the Simply Tarot deck

Eight of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

The Acknowledger
Departure • Searching • Release

The Eight of Cups is, unarguably, a sad card. You have given up on, or lost hope of resolving, issues in a relationship you have invested a lot into. You're feeling hurt, upset and disappointed. Some form of emotional withdrawal or letting go may now be necessary; accepting what cannot be resolved allows you, in time, to begin looking towards the future.

Sometimes a relationship can matter deeply and still reach a point where feelings and effort are no longer enough to overcome the problems within it. The Subject may have done all they reasonably can, while the possibility of change now depends on another person, circumstances beyond their control, or something they simply cannot resolve themselves.

The difficulty lies in recognising the limits of what emotional investment can achieve. Continuing to care does not necessarily mean continuing to try to fix what cannot be fixed, and letting go may involve more than the relationship itself. The Subject may also need to relinquish hopes, expectations or plans for how they wanted things to be. The Eight of Cups reminds us that there comes a point when accepting what cannot be changed is necessary before we can begin to move forward.

Love & Relationships

Someone may be emotionally withdrawing from a relationship that no longer gives them what they need. Walking away can be painful, particularly when a great deal of love, hope or emotional investment has already been given. Not every relationship ends because the feelings have completely disappeared; sometimes disappointment and unmet emotional needs make it difficult to continue.

Material Life

Difficulties within an important relationship or emotional connection may be beginning to affect your material stability. Disappointment, separation or withdrawal can have practical consequences, particularly when other areas of life have become connected to that relationship. Changes may follow in your work, finances, living arrangements or sense of security. Try to deal with the practical consequences carefully, even while the emotional situation remains difficult.

Notes from the Artist

The tree is wilting and looking sorry with its lack of healthy leaves and blooms. Eight Cups sit within the branches and will drop soon into the pool below. There is no growth, no promise, even the water streams have now become a trickle. There is no sparkle, no unity, no abundance, no control of what happens.
